7-Day Interview Practice Plan (Australian Job Seekers)

Updated 2026-10-03 · Interview Buddy team
This is a practice plan, not a reading plan. If you've already done the groundwork — researched the company, read the job ad, drafted your stories — this seven-day schedule turns that preparation into fluent, out-loud delivery through daily reps. (If you're starting from scratch, do our preparation guide first, then come back here to rehearse.)
Each day has one focused practice task you can finish in 20–40 minutes, plus mock-interview prompts to answer out loud. The point is reps: saying your answers, hearing where they wander, and tightening them before the real thing.

Day 1 — Build your story bank

List your six to eight strongest examples from the last few years — wins, messes, conflicts, turning points. For each, write one line per STAR element. This is your raw material for every behavioural round.
•
Mock prompt: 'Tell me about a time you worked in a team to achieve a goal.'
•
Mock prompt: 'Describe a time something went wrong. What did you do?'

Day 2 — Say them out loud and time them

Deliver each story aloud and time it. Anything over two minutes gets trimmed; anything missing a result gets one. Record yourself or run a mock interview and listen back for vagueness and 'we' instead of 'I'.
•
Mock prompt: 'Give me an example of showing initiative.'
•
Mock prompt: 'Tell me about a time you handled pressure or a tight deadline.'

Day 3 — Tell me about yourself + why this role

Rehearse your opening answer (present, past, future, under 90 seconds) and a specific 'why this company / why this role' built on real research. These two set the tone for the whole interview.
•
Mock prompt: 'Tell me about yourself.'
•
Mock prompt: 'Why do you want to work here, and why this role?'

Day 4 — The hard questions

Work the ones people dread: greatest weakness, a failure, a conflict with a manager, a gap on your resume. Prepare honest, non-defensive answers and say each one aloud twice.
•
Mock prompt: 'What's your greatest weakness?'
•
Mock prompt: 'Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager.'

Day 5 — Role- and format-specific practice

Tailor to your actual process: practise a technical or case round if your loop has one, or rehearse a recorded video round (look at the lens, use the prep time, keep to the time box). Pull two likely questions straight from your job ad.
•
Mock prompt: pick two competencies named in your job ad and answer one question on each.
•
Mock prompt: 'Why should we hire you?'

Day 6 — Full dress rehearsal

Do one complete mock interview end to end — no stopping, no re-dos — to build stamina and surface the gaps a single-question drill hides. Then note your three weakest answers.
•
Mock prompt: run a full 8–10 question mock interview for your target role and get scored feedback.
•
Reflection: which three answers were weakest, and why?

Day 7 — Fix the weak spots and prepare your questions

Re-do only your three weakest answers until they land. Finalise two or three thoughtful questions to ask them, and a calm one-line framing for anything tricky (a gap, a career change). Then rest — cramming the night before hurts more than it helps.
•
Mock prompt: re-answer your three weakest questions from Day 6.
•
Reflection: what are my three questions for the interviewer, and what's my honest line for any awkward topic?

How to use the plan

1.
Do the task of the day — 20–40 minutes is enough if it's focused.
2.
Always answer the mock prompts out loud, not in your head.
3.
Record or run a scored mock so you get feedback, not just repetition.
4.
Keep a running note of weak answers to target later in the week.
5.
If your interview is in three days, not seven, compress: Days 1–2, then 5–6, then 7.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from your "how to prepare" guide?

The preparation guide covers the groundwork — researching the company, understanding the role, logistics. This plan is about rehearsal: a day-by-day schedule of out-loud practice and mock prompts to turn that preparation into fluent delivery. Do the prep first, then use this to practise.

How long does each day take?

About 20–40 minutes of focused practice, plus answering the day's mock prompts out loud. It's designed to fit around work or study.

What if my interview is in three days, not seven?

Compress it: do Day 1–2 (story bank and out-loud reps), then Day 5–6 (role-specific and a full mock), then Day 7 (fix weak spots and prepare questions). The story bank and the full mock are the non-negotiables.

Do I really need to answer out loud?

Yes — it's the whole point. Thinking 'I've got a good example' is not the same as delivering it in two tight minutes under pressure. Out-loud reps are what build fluency and calm.

How do I get feedback if I am practising alone?

Record yourself and watch for vagueness, 'we' instead of 'I', and missing results — or run a mock interview that scores you. Interview Buddy gives instant feedback on each answer so you're not guessing what to fix.

Should I practise the night before?

Do a light review of your stories and your questions, then stop and rest. A good night's sleep does more for your performance than last-minute cramming, which tends to make you more anxious, not more prepared.

Can I run the daily mock prompts with an AI interviewer?

Yes — that's exactly what Interview Buddy is for. Each day, answer the prompts out loud in a mock interview and get scored feedback, then use the week to close the gaps it surfaces.
